Welcome Data Recovery Services
Hello and Welcome! This site is dedicated to providing information on data recovery and backup services.
Customers change disk drives at rates far higher than those proposeed by the estimated mean time between failure (MTBF) supplied by hard drive (hdd) vendors, in accordance with a study of about 100,000 drives performed by Carnegie Mellon University. The MTBF is basically the average amount of time between a hard drive (hdd) failure and repair to the next hard drive failure. MTBF is a statistical measure, and as such, it can’t foresee anything for a single hdd unit. We can utilize that MTBF rating more precisely, however, to compute that if we have 1,000 such hard drives operating constantly in a data center, we can anticipate one to fail every 58 days or so, for a total of possibly 19 failures in three years.
As a computer technician, I have seen drives fail anywhere from 3 years to 3 weeks. The failure can be due to head, plate or circuit board malfunction. So the MTBF still provides little relevance to your particular hard drive. Just know that hard drives fail far more often than the manufacturer data suggests.
